The Self in Neuroscience and Social Psychology
Abstract
Less than 40 years ago the reigning opinion in much of social psychology was that thinking about the human self was a waste of time. Fifteen to twenty years ago this was also a popular view among neuroscientists. The study of self is now a thriving enterprise in both fields. In 1999, Antonio Damasio published The Feeling of What Happens which put the self on center stage in his thinking.
