Description of Spirostomum ambiguum

Long, vermiform, heterotrich ciliate, attains up to 3 mm long, the body maintaining the same width all along its length. The peristome is very long, occupying three-quarters of the body length. The adoral zone of membranelles is conspicuous, and an undulating membrane is absent. Somatic ciliation is uniform, the macronucleus is beaded and long. There is a large posterior contractile vacuole with a dorsal canal reaching right to the anterior apex of the cell. Highly contractile.
